Please be kind

I know, I know, another mental health piece.

And it isn’t even mental health awareness month.

But this has to be said: it’s important.

Vital, actually.

It isn’t possible to say too many times.

Please be kind. What you do or say today can change a life.

“You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late,” said Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Listen to his words.

At 8am this Saturday 25 November, Emma Webb will start walking from the David Broome Event Centre in Chepstow, south Wales to London, pulling a life-size resin horse called Miles. That’s 157.85 miles, pulling a 4 stone 10 pound horse.

It will take Emma 15 days to walk to the ExCel centre in London. Her journey will end at the London International Horse Show on December 13.

But actually, her journey will never end.

Because her daughter, Brodie, took her own life aged 16, in March 2020.

“I’m a mother, but now I have no child,” Emma says. “I have all this love, and nowhere to put it.”

So she’s put it into raising thousands in aid of suicide prevention and awareness, and into helping to break down the stigma around mental health.

She and Miles are raising funds for the suicide prevention charity, Papyrus, and, as Brodie was a horse rider and showjumper, for Riders Minds, a charity dedicated to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of horse riders and equestrians.

“My life might be ruined, but I can help other people and, somehow, channelling that love and grief for Brodie gives me a purpose.”

And today, tomorrow, next week, and next year – please reach out a helping hand of kindness.

Not judgement. Not criticism.

Be kind.
